Sustainability
Farmed fish are a problem because they are pen raised. This prohibits them from accessing their natural food sources and habitats; therefore they need to be fed by humans. The fish meal that they have been fed has created several problems including excess algae bloom which can kill off many indigenous marine plants and animals by using up all the dissolved oxygen in the habitat.
Shellfish farms actually improve marine ecosystems. Shellfish are filter feeders that actually help keep algae under control. They are like little aquatic regulators. We don't need to add anything to the water for them to thrive. Shellfish farmers are more like organic farmers than fish farmers. We place the seed (shellfish larvae) in optimum growing areas, keep the beaches clean and we are ever mindful of pollution or excessive predators (like starfish ducks and drill) that reduce their survival rate. You will find that shellfish farmers are often the most diligent stewards of the marine ecosystem, our livelihoods depend on it.
As we harvest by hand, we carefully select only the very best market ready product. We are careful to leave the younger clams and oysters to grow for future seasons, enabling them to thrive with less competition for available nutrients while we harvest only the best, most flavorful shellfish for your enjoyment.
